Students receive national award nomination

May 8 2025 – A journalism collaboration that INCA students worked on has been nominated for a Michener Award, Canada’s highest honour for journalism that serves the public interest.

The nomination is for a collaborative investigation with Global News into federal contracts that were meant to be set aside for Indigenous business.

“The team exposed a litany of loopholes, lack of scrutiny and serious shortcomings in the program, with many contracts going to companies that were Indigenous only on paper, and with few benefits winding up in Indigenous communities,” the Michener Award Foundation stated in an announcement.

The Foundation praised the “fruitful collaboration with First Nations University,” noting the investigative stories prompted parliamentary committee studies, probes by the country’s ethics commissioner and two separate audits.
