Blocked by Meta

Our Facebook page has been blocked by Meta, owner of Facebook, as part of their protest against the Online News Act. The Online News Act was drafted as a means to hold U.S.-based social media giants like Meta and Google to account, and to provide compensation for Canadian news outlets for the free sharing of their content, which drives much of the advertising revenue that social media companies enjoy. In response, Meta enacted a blockade against Canadian news on their platform. They determined that the INCA Facebook page — where students go for information about scholarships, courses and job opportunities — is a “news outlet.” They have refused to budge on this, and say we cannot appeal again for six months. This illustrates why we need a law to ensure social media companies are more responsive and transparent to users of their platforms.
