Students gain first-hand experience in the exciting world of investigative journalism

Through a research collaboration between Global News and INCA, a group of students spent the summer working behind the scenes of a major journalism investigation.

The collaboration was a unique “earn while your learn” opportunity, mentored by award-winning journalists Melissa Ridgen, Patti Sonntag and Alex Boutilier.

The team helped investigate complaints from Indigenous business operators, who said Ottawa was awarding contracts meant for Indigenous businesses to non-Indigenous companies.

Researchers Celeste Bird, Hannah Sangster, Gokce On, Emily Wren and Cat Zens gained advanced skills in obtaining corporate and government documents, and analyzing complex data. It was a unique opportunity to experience the exciting life of an investigative journalist first-hand.
